Your Dental Health is Important!

April 25, 2017

Today we would like to talk about the importance of a healthy mouth and good oral hygiene.  Your dental health is important and can influence your overall health and well-being. We encourage our patients to make a habit of six-month check-ups and regular hygiene appointments for cleaning and polishing. We concentrate on and encourage good oral hygiene habits and prevention.

Daily brushing and flossing is important because it removes plaque and debris. When the plaque is not removed, it continues to build up and eventually causes tooth decay and gum disease.  We recommend brushing your teeth 2 times a day with an ADA recommended fluoride toothpaste, daily flossing, daily tongue cleaning, and rinsing with an antibacterial rinse.  Place the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums. Gently brush in a circular motion. Brush the outer surfaces, inner surfaces, and chewing surfaces of the teeth. This will take about 2 minutes. Then brush the tongue by using a sweeping motion with the toothbrush or by using a tongue scraper.   Once you are done brushing, it is important to clean the sides of the teeth with dental floss or other interdental cleaner and then rinse with a recommended antibacterial mouth rinse.  There are several different types of toothbrushes and flossing aids available. Your dental professional can help you determine your specific needs.

Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that support the teeth. In advanced stages, the bone around the teeth is affected and tooth loss can occur.  Not only can teeth be lost due to gum disease, it has also been linked to heart attacks, stroke, uncontrolled diabetes, and many other health concerns.

Until next time,

Keep smiling, caring, and sharing
